![]() ![]() Recommended recording: Bernard Herrmann: Bernard Herrmann – The Essential Film Music CollectionĪnd now we come to our top 3 and if ever there is a single artist who dominates 21st-century film music, it is Hans Zimmer. His scores for Alfred Hitchcock remain some of the most striking ever written. With a singular voice, the American film composer created scintillating film scores that relied less on melodic sweep and more on rhythm, tone and unusual instrumentation. Less than ten years after Max Steiner wrote the film music rulebook, Bernard Herrmann tore it up. Recommended recording: Ennio Morricone: Morricone 60 Beyond the colourful thrills of those scores, Morricone was a true music artist and one of the hardest working composers in film. The name is about as iconic as the music, and the late Italian film composer will go down in history thanks to the hugely original music he created for the ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ alone. The first of our top five is Ennio Morricone. His music for UK and US productions has only increased his fan-base – the music he wrote for Slumdog Millionaire (2008) earned him two Academy Awards, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.ĪR Rahman: Slumdog Millionaire (Music from the Motion Picture) The most prolific and successful film composer in Indian cinema, AR Rahman’s scores and original songs have graced countless Tamil and Hindi productions. Recommended recording: Joe Hisaishi: Dream Songs – The Essential Joe Hisaishi He has won eight Japanese Academy Awards. Dubbed ‘the Japanese John Williams’, Hisaishi is a household name in his home country, but also has legions of fans around the world thanks to his sweeping, characterful scores for the films of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Recommended recording: John Barry: Dances With Wolves (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) His music, and songs, for many of the original James Bond films are probably good enough reason alone to include him in this list, though he enjoyed a rich and varied career beyond 007 and won five Oscars to boot. Perhaps Britain’s most famous film music export, John Barry enjoyed a high profile career throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. ![]() Recommended recording: Lawrence of Arabia (World Premiere Recording of the Complete Score)Įighth is the British film composer John Barry. His keen sense of melody was matched by an experimental streak, which often saw him integrate ethnic instrumentation and electronic sounds into his music. The first French composer to win an Oscar (for 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia), Maurice Jarre enjoyed a high profile career in his native France, the UK and Hollywood. Recommended recording: Chocolat (Music from the Miramax Motion Picture) Her painterly scores have graced award-winning films in all genres and she remains one of the UK’s most respected and highly sought-after film composers. While she was by no means the first woman to compose film music, Portman did make history in 1997 when she won an Oscar for Emma (1996). In 10th place we have film composer Rachel Portman.

![]() ![]() ![]() You can find your 'Expression color' drop-down box in your 'Layer Properties' window or by right-clicking your layer and selecting 'Convert Layer'. If you're making brush tips out of scanned images and want to get rid of the white background, you can change the 'Expression color' of the layer to 'Grayscale' (or Monochrome) and click the black box next to the drop-down menu to ensure only the black is visible. The same user also has a longer video on brush settings in MS5: I really wish I hadn't had to learn these basics the hard way. If you are new to MS5/CSP I highly recommend watching this short video before you begin experimenting with brushmaking: If you want to make your own brushes, please note that if you want your brush to repeat the colour you're painting with and not the colour the brush tip was made with then the Brush Tip needs to be created on a Grayscale/Monochrome Layer! I haven't bought his brush set but it looked good so feel free to give it a try. The video's a bit slow but it is thorough, so good for beginners. ![]() If you're just planning to use my brushes as they are, I recommend skipping this folder. I've included them mainly for those interested in making their own brushes. Some of them also lag, or don't repeat well outside a particular resolution, so be warned. Mostly they have the issue of the brusheads not having been created in grayscale and thus repeating the colour black instead of your palette colour unless one enables the mixing options. They have interesting effects to them even in their current state. I keep them around because some of them have a good idea for a brush and I keep meaning to remake them. These are some of my earliest attempts at brushmaking. The title says 'Unoptimised' for a reason. Simple leaf-like patterns, a bark-like pattern, and a couple of sponge-like brushes. I avoided the scatter setting (Spraying effect) with these ones, again to keep them smooth and efficient.Īs a side note, when using spraying effects I recommend keeping the 'Particle size' option visible in your 'Tool property' window. The rest repeat their brush tip at various angles with some size variation to create interesting, organic patterns. These are my most recent brushes, all based on real, scanned ink strokes.Īll the 'Stroke' ones are ribbon brushes, so they handle well even at larger sizes. I tend to have it on to begin with, but since the Ink settings mix heavily, I sometimes switch it off for a few strokes to add new colour on top of existing colour, then back on again for blending. Since it uses the basic round brush tip it resist lag even at large sizes.Īll the brushes labelled as 'block and blend' are ones where I actively change the 'Mix ground color' setting off and on as I go. Simple Round is a great tool for filling in large areas or blocking out your basic colours. It's without a doubt one of my favourites. Play around with it, blend colours with it. Sketch Pen works well for sketching out lineart.ĭigi Brush 4 handles wonderfully for creating painterly colours. Good for a nice, variable line while inking, or for sketching, or for getting a thin, crisp line. It's a hard, basic round brush which is very responsive to pressure sensitivity and slides smoothly from a very thin line to a nice, thick one. Most of them I use as-is, changing the size as I go, but not much else.Ĭel is based on one of my favourite Sai brushes. ![]() When you download and unzip the files, you'll be left with a folder containing four sub-folders. Though I've moved on to Clip Studio Paint, I've tested my newer brushes in Manga Studio 5 so they shouldn't give you trouble either way. There's quite a bit of overlap between them and some of the brushes already in this set, but I felt it's clearer to keep the folders as they are. These are the current brushes I use, the exact same set that's found in my more recent submission here. Added another folder called 'dw csp brushes'. ![]() ![]() The use of our LD laser toners for the HP LaserJet 1100 does not void your printers warranty and comes with a 100 Satisfaction Guarantee. Players are given the option of bypassing the crafting system and purchasing weapons and vehicles via microtransactions, but the game isn't actively forcing this path. Ubisoft fans may recoil at the word microtransaction, but they do exist in New Dawn - though there's no Odyssey-level of grinding if players wish to avoid purchases. This encourages players to explore the world and gather the supplies necessary to level up these weapons, a process which is thankfully relatively grind-free. Higher ranking enemies are better-equipped and can take on much more damage, so players will need to upgrade their own arsenal to level the playing field. Ubisoft has evolved the traditional Far Cry formula with what it calls a 'light RPG approach', which means enemies, outposts, and weapons all now have tiered ranking systems. The result is that New Dawn is constantly putting players in a position to be doing something exciting, which makes the game hard to put down. ![]() Tasks like skinning animals is done with a single button click, a fast travel system cuts out most to-and-fro travel elements, and actions like repeating outpost raids can be triggered straight from the worldmap. Each element of gameplay puts players firmly into the action, with previous series elements that slowed down this process having been cut out entirely. Much like in Far Cry 5, Ubisoft has kept the open-world gameplay fast and fluid in New Dawn. This setting provides an enjoyable backdrop as players jump in to explore a world filled with random enemy encounters, treasure puzzles, and epic beasts. This isn't a world filled with inhabitants who gave up after the bombs dropped, but rather reclaimed everything in their own, new-world style. Here, players will find brightly-painted graffiti all around Hope County with DIY structures, vehicles, and weapons aplenty. It's fitting that one of the first in-game songs players will hear is from Die Antwoord, because the aesthetic of the band would blend right in with the colorful post-apocalyptic world of New Dawn. In Far Cry New Dawn, the gameplay is fast, fluid, and a natural evolution to the tried-and-true Far Cry formula. The new world is full of color, rusting relics of the past, and well-armed residents with an appetite for combat. Instead of a bleak, brown-and-gray post-apocalyptic scenario, Ubisoft has focused on life once nuclear winter has given way to a superbloom. Far Cry New Dawn is a standalone sequel to Far Cry 5 set 17 years after the bombs drop over Hope County. ![]() ![]() ![]() The assumption seems to be that players will enjoy this,” the researcher says. You are forced into a scene where you perhaps behead a wolf, and you cannot turn it off, you are forced to watch it unless you avoid the sequence altogether by killing it with a bow and arrow. “What is also quite unusual, even for a game with a high level of brutality, is that this violent killing sequence also plays out when you kill an animal. “This is more graphic than most other games I have played in this genre,” Skjoldli says. You can regulate the amount of blood shown for instance, and you can choose whether or not you want to follow a camera angle that follows the dagger into the intestines of the person or animal being killed. Some of the more extreme sequences can be toned down by the player. (Photo: Øyvind Ganesh Eknes/Assumption that the player will enjoy beheading wolves? She was surprised by the level of violence found in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Researcher Jane Skjoldli is herself a gamer. It seems to encourage sadistic responses to violence,” she says.Īlthough Assassin’s Creed is a game series where the goal has always been to assassinate people, these killings have not commonly been nearly as brutal or graphic as in the Viking version according to Skjoldli. It’s a sequence that takes about 5-6 seconds, and this can feel like a very long time when it is repeated over and over. “It becomes a sort of repetitive forced sequence of violence, where your character disarms the other, takes the weapon and overkills by pounding the enemy ad nauseam. “However, when this happens in Valhalla, it seems that nearly every single time, the camera and the player is overtaken by the game mechanics – you lose control over your avatar, or character, and are forced to watch a sequence in which an unusually long and obnoxious killing sequence takes place,” Skjoldli explains. When there is a fight between the player and a computer-controlled figure, the goal obviously is for the player to win – meaning killing the other. A large chunk of the game takes place in a fledgeling Viking colony in England, which the player has to build with pillaged materials. (Image: Ubisoft Montreal) Forced to watch the killĪn important part of the game is to rob monasteries. This may exaggerate our impression of Vikings as particularly violent, according to Norwegian archaeologists. She finds the game represents a specific type of popular culture Viking – a brutal warrior, who simultaneously embodies somewhat progressive gender norms while also representing a conservative masculine ideal.Ĭompared to the other Assassin’s Creed games however, Skjoldli has observed a difference in the quality and level of violence she has observed in the game.Ī fair share of our knoweldge of the Vikings comes from English written sources - meaning written by those at the receiving end of the violent raids. Skjoldli’s project focuses on popular culture in the lives of those who are interested in all things Viking.Īs part of her study of music, movies and digital games, Skjoldli has been studying Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which was released in November 2020. Over the next few years Skjoldli and her colleagues will analyze how the contemporary idea of Vikings is constructed, interpreted and promoted in various cultural spheres. She is one of five researchers in the project Back to blood at the University of Stavanger. ![]() There is a level of brutality present in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla which is not typical for this blockbuster game series, according to Jane Skjoldli. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, this film is really good, but has much less sex, violence, and action than the first film. These are two masterful films that have an excellent story of corruption and evil. All film-lovers have to see the first two "Godfather" films. This is a perfect film that completes the story of Michael Corleone. "The Godfather Part II" is my favorite film sequel ever because it completes the first movie so well and makes us understand why the first film is so important. I do prefer the first film because of Marlon Brando's performance. Like the first film, this is a quotable movie. Francis Ford Coppola gives one of the best directing jobs of all time. This is a movie that takes its time to tell a story. "The Godfather Part II" is really violent like its predecessor and it may be even more violent. I also liked when Vito was discussing with Clemenza and Tessio on what to do about Fanucci. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when Michael is talking to his mother. The costumes felt like it was the late 1950s. The set decoration was absolutely mesmerizing. Gazzo, Lee Strasberg, Diane Keaton, and Talia Shire were excellent as well. John Cazale gave a great performance and made us feel for his character. Robert Duvall was also good in this movie. He only spoke 5 sentences of English and spoke Italian for the rest of the movie. Robert De Niro was also very good in this film. He gave one of the five best performances of all time. I have absolutely no idea how he did not win the Oscar(R) for "Best Actor". Pacino really steps it up from the previous film in the trilogy showing more anger and hatred. ![]() Throughout the film, I saw this anger and desire for vengeance eating away at him. Al Pacino gives one of the best performances of all time as Michael Corleone. These two stories parallel each other perfectly. The movie also goes back in time to show a young Vito Corleone and shows his rise to power. "The Godfather Part II" continues the story of Michael Corleone and shows his downfall. It does what any sequel should do: complement the predecessor. "The Godfather Part II" is easily my favorite movie sequel ever. It really is one movie it tells one story. I consider "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II" my favorite movie of all time.
